On August 4, the Millennium Institute of Oceanography (IMO) conducted a formal ceremony to celebrate the opening of its new headquarters located in Los Tilos 1134, right in the heart of Concepción’s Barrio Universitario.
This ceremony was attended by respected authorities of the University of Concepción, the educational institution that has supported IMO since its origins, including vice-rector of Research and Development Carlos González, director of Innovation and Development Claudio Valdovinos, dean of the Faculty of Natural and Oceanographic Sciences Margarita Marchant, vice-dean of the Faculty of Natural and Oceanographic Sciences Víctor Hernández, and dean of the Faculty of Environmental Science Ricardo Barra.
The IMO building is constantly being used by personnel belonging to the Administration, Outreach and Marine Operations teams. It also has laboratories and a large meeting room available for IMO members, including assistant researchers, junior researchers, postdocs, doctoral students, Master’s students and undergraduate students.
IMO executive director Atilio Morgado explains: “The IMO building was acquired because of the need for more space for our working teams, especially for Administration, Outreach, Marine Operations and Development and Technology Transfer. In addition to boasting an adequate meeting room, it will operate as an Outreach center and experimental laboratory, and will also be used for postgraduate activities.”
The person responsible for the headquarters is Dr. Osvaldo Ulloa, IMO’s director, while IMO’s Executive Board is in charge of its administration.
