Last Wednesday September 6, within the scientific context of IMPAC4, Dr. Victor Aguilera, junior researcher at IMO, gave a talk on the impact of CO2 on the ocean.
The event took place in La Serena, in the Tololo café-bar, a well-known venue in the city. More than 60 people attended and, while enjoying quality coffee, listened carefully to the talk from the scientist who also works at the Center for Dryland Studies, CEAZA.
Dr. Aguilera highlighted the importance of raising awareness about this particular topic. “This is one type of activity we are conducting through IMO and CEAZA. I consider that the fact that it is done outside the academic circle is highly positive, since it gives different groups of people the opportunity to become acquainted with the subject,” said the marine scientist.
The activity lasted almost 2 hours, due to the enthusiasm of the public who made their own comments on the subject and asked questions at the end of the presentation. With regard to the topic, Aguilera said: “The ocean is the planet’s main biome. It is also the main climate regulator, so we should all be aware of the situation. This kind of dissemination of information and outreach from academia to the general public is absolutely necessary. IMO and CEAZA will always be willing to take part in such events”.
It is important to point out that Victor Aguilera has a vast experience in scientific research due to his affiliations with both The Millennium Institute of Oceanography and CEAZA. He was also the IMO ambassador in charge of the Traveling Scientific Audiovisual Exhibit (MACI) in Antofagasta last year.
